Experience Better Connectivity – The Switch Off of 2G and 3G Networks

Is your organisation ready to stay connected?

From October 2025, UK organisations face critical changes in mobile connectivity as major mobile network operators shut down 3G services and begin phasing out 2G, with full discontinuation by 2023.

This shift affects a wide range of mobile providers and has serious implications for technologies – such as certain medical devices – that depend on legacy networks. To support a smooth and compliant transition, our Communications Solutions and Associated Telephony Services framework offers comprehensive solutions, including equipment supply, installation, support, and maintenance. The equipment under this framework may be provided as a direct purchase or via a lease agreement.

UK Mobile Network Operators are turning off their 3G networks, and 2G will be phased out by 2033 at the latest. This impacts all other mobile companies that operate over their networks (via roaming). The companies affected include:

  • Vodafone – Lebara Mobile, Asda Mobile, Talk Mobile and VOXI
  • EE – Your Co-op, 1p Mobile, Utility Warehouse, Ecotalk, Lycamobile, BT Mobile
  • Virgin/O2 – Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff and Sky Mobile
  • Three (3G Only) – ID Mobile and Smarty, Freedompop and Superdrug Mobile

Vodafone, EE, and Three completed their 3G switch-offs in 2024, while O2 is expected to complete its 3G shutdown during 2025.

There are also implications for some medical technology products which use mobile communications technologies. The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) is working with the industry to ensure preparedness, identifying which products rely on 2G and where there may be a risk to supply.

Technologies relying on 2G connections must be upgraded or replaced. While the final deadline for the 2G switch-off is no later than 2033, some networks may act sooner. Users, suppliers, procurers and managers of medical technology need to be aware of these changes and assess potential impacts.

Our framework can ensure a compliant route for your organisation to simply transition from 2G products to those that are supported by 4G and 5G. To find out more about our framework, visit here: communications-solutions-and-associated-telephony-services
