Direct Vision Standard Changes in 2024

Is Your Fleet Up to Date?

The Direct Vision Standard (DVS) and HGV Safety Permit Scheme mandate that operators of lorries over 12 tonnes gross vehicle weight must secure a safety permit before entering and operating in most of Greater London. Non-compliance can result in a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN). From 28 October 2024, the DVS requirements will change.

  • Purpose: The scheme supports the Mayor of London's Vision Zero plan, which aims to eliminate all deaths and serious injuries on London's transport network by 2041.
  • DVS Ratings: Evaluates driver visibility through cab windows, assigning a star rating from zero (limited) to five (excellent). From 28 October 2024, vehicles must have at least a three-star rating or be equipped with the Progressive Safe System.

You can apply for a permit for free here: DVS VRM Checker - Transport for London (tfl.gov.uk)

Our Vehicle Telematics and Associated Services framework enhances fleet management by integrating navigation, safety, security, and communication technologies.

How can it help?

  • Safety Compliance: Telematics systems can help monitor and maintain the safety standards required by the DVS, ensuring vehicles meet the necessary star ratings or are equipped with the Progressive Safe System.
  • Real-time Monitoring: Continuous tracking and data collection help in real-time compliance with safety permits, reducing the risk of incurring PCNs.
  • Driver Behaviour and Training: Insights from telematics can be used to train drivers on better practices, aligning with Vision Zero goals to reduce road incidents.
  • Environmental Impact: Telematics data on fuel usage and emissions support the reduction of the carbon footprint, complementing the safety measures of the DVS and HGV scheme.
